What is a cat scratch couch protector table?

It is a piece of furniture that does two jobs. For you, it is an end table with a flat top for a lamp, a drink or a book, rated for up to 50 lbs. For your cat, the side that faces the sofa arm is covered in natural sisal, the rough, fibrous surface cats like to drag their claws through.

Because the table stands flush against the arm, it covers the exact corner most cats shred, and gives them a better place to scratch in the same spot. That matters: cats scratch where the habit already is. The Indoor Pet Initiative at Ohio State recommends putting the scratcher right where your cat already scratches, then rewarding them for using it.

Which side and height fit my sofa?

Pick the side. Stand facing your sofa. If your cat attacks the left arm, choose the Left table; for the right arm, choose Right. If both arms are scratched, the Pair covers both and costs less than two singles. For chaise sectionals, the table can protect the front or back corner of the chaise.

Pick the height. Measure the arm at the front corner, from floor to the top of the arm. Then pick the closest height that does not tower over it:

Your arm height Pick
Under 23.5 in 21.5 in (base, the lowest option)
23.5 in to just under 25.5 in 23.5 in (2" riser)
25.5 in or more 25.5 in (4" riser)

Not sure? Our guide to corner scratcher tables for rolled-arm, recliner and armless sofas covers the trickier shapes. For both arms, see the couch corner protector pair.

Why a table instead of tape or covers?

Tape, foil, sprays and clear plastic guards make the couch less attractive. They work for days, weeks or a few months, and then need replacing. They also look temporary in a living room. None of them gives your cat somewhere else to scratch, so many cats just move to the next unprotected spot.

A protector table changes that. It:

  • covers the arm corner where most damage happens,
  • redirects scratching to sisal at the same spot, instead of only blocking it,
  • lasts, because the sisal mats attach with Velcro and can be swapped when worn, and
  • looks like furniture, in Walnut or Maple, so it can stay for good.

We compare every option, from tape to tables, in our cat couch protector guide. If you were weighing the Cat-e-Corner, see our Cat-e-Corner alternative page.

How do you set it up so your cat uses it?

  1. Slide the table flush against the arm your cat scratches, sisal side facing out where your cat approaches.
  2. Rub a little catnip or silvervine on the sisal.
  3. When your cat goes for the couch, guide them to the sisal and praise or treat them when they use it.
  4. Trim nails every couple of weeks while the new habit settles in; the ASPCA recommends regular trims and never punishing scratching.

Most owners pair the table with a short-term deterrent (tape or a throw) on any part of the arm that is still exposed. When the sisal wears down, peel the mat off and press a new one on.
